road trip - part I

Simon and I planned this super awesome two week road trip. We were going mainly be in Austria and Switzerland with a little bit of time in Slovakia, Croatia and Slovenia to see his Uncle Dave. We thought it would be such a shame to be so close to these countries and not really see them. Well, the first week turned out to have a lot more unexpected excitement than we would of like. A brand new rental car breaking down on us in the middle of nowhere, a sick kid, a trip to the hospital... Not fun stuff.

The second week was awesome. I decided to blog about the first week first and then end on a good note

We started out by driving to Austria and Conley and Auburn both threw up. My stomach couldn't handle the clean up because I was car sick myself, so Simon got clean up duty.
We cleaned up and then went for a beautiful walk around this Gosausee. Breathtaking.

We then headed to Hallstatt where we ate lunch, walked around the city, and visited the Beinhaus.

We then drove to Liechtensteinklamm. Liechtensteinklamm is one of the deepest and longest gorges in the Alps. The Prince of Liechtenstein help funded the project to create walkways so people could enjoy it. It really cool.

After this, our car broke down somewhere in Austria. Yep, a brand new rental car breaking down. Unbelieveable. After lots of waiting, a tow truck ride, a taxi ride, more waiting, we finally had our new wheels and were able to continue.

The next day Auburn was sick, but not too bad, so we kept going. We drove through some beautiful country. We stopped in Vienna. We have been there before, but it was pretty quick so we saw some new things. This is the car that Archduke Franz Ferdinand was riding in. That event triggered WWI.

We stopped in Bratislava, Slovakia for night and explored the town for a day.

Once we were in Bratislava, we realized that Auburn was not getting better. She started refusing to eat. The next morning we drove back to Austria to a city called Eisenstadt. We took Auburn to the hospital where we were told that she needed to spend a night to have an IV infusion and to do some tests. It turns out that she had an intestinal infection. We, nor the doctors, have no idea what it came from. The doctors where very confused that Auburn was sick and not Conley. The poor little girl was sick. It was so heartbreaking to see her hooked up to an IV and just feeling awful. That is the worst thing ever as a parent to see your child suffer. She ended up staying for three nights. I was able to stay with her the entire time. Simon came once a day and spent a few hours with her, while I took Conley out for some fresh air. Simon also had to keep Conley busy while Auburn was in the hospital.

She recovered quickly after the antibiotics and IV. She had to be on a strict diet for a week after, but when we left the hospital she was happy, but still a little tired. We headed back to Munich that night to regroup and decide on the rest of our vacation plans.
